About

Hi, I’m Manss Aval

I Am an Award-Winning Visual Artist, Curator, and Designer

I explore art at the intersection of science, culture, and imagination. My background spans media, communications, and the sciences. I hold a Ph.D., and each of these fields shapes how I see the world and how I create within it. My work draws from this multidisciplinary lens, resulting in a body of art that merges intuition with intellect, form with feeling.

Whether through the serenity of my minimalist photography or the gestural intensity of my abstract paintings, I strive to evoke stillness and dynamism simultaneously. I’m deeply inspired by structure, symmetry, and contour—tactility guides much of what I create—but I’m equally fascinated by movement and transformation. My process often begins with ordinary forms like rectangles or spirals and follows their evolution into fluid, multidimensional constructs that challenge perception and invite contemplation.

Geometry captivates me. It underpins both nature and culture. Although I grew up in the West, I maintain a strong connection to Eastern artistic traditions, especially the intricate patternwork and calligraphic rhythm of Iranian art. In the dialogue between these worlds, my pieces come alive. Circles become dynamic, doughnut-shaped portals. Rectangles shift into hexagons and beyond, unfolding into flexible, ever-expanding boundaries.

My influences include Escher’s impossible structures, Kiarostami’s poetic restraint, and Vasarely’s optical rhythm. Like them, I explore the edge where logic dissolves into sensation.

I live and work in San Diego, where I continue to explore photography, painting, and sculpture—always seeking new ways to blur the lines between disciplines. My art has been featured in more than 90 juried exhibitions across the globe, in cities such as New York, Tokyo, Florence, and Paris, and recognized with over 70 international awards. From the Louvre to the Athenaeum Museum, my work has engaged audiences in diverse contexts. I remain humbled by its resonance.

More than 30 publications have featured my work, yet each new project still feels like the first: a chance to examine complexity through the lens of simplicity and to uncover the extraordinary hidden in the familiar.

This is my journey—rooted in tradition, propelled by curiosity, and always evolving.
